Chuck Belt Stirring Grapes at Spout Spring

Wine has been around for thousands of years. It all began when ancient humans had their berries and grapes spoil, naturally fermenting into a juice. The juice was so delicious that desire for the drink soared thus beginning both the making of wine and its world wide circulation. As wine and wine making grew rapidly in popularity so did the corresponding cultural festivities and festivals we still enjoy and participate in today.

Spout Spring House and Vineyard

Being the first successful growers of Cabernet grapes east of the Mississippi, family owned, loved and ran Spout Spring Estates Winery and Vineyard blends the ancient with the modern for a deliciously fun celebration of wine making in the Great Smokey Mountains. Owners Chuck and Alice Belt have re-imagined the wine making and tasting experience by integrating fun age old festivities (and some new ones) with informative lessons on wine production and wine tasting.

THE STOMPING OF GRAPES

Dating back to the Roman Empire in 3rd century A.D., the stomping of wine grapes occurred after harvest as a method to release the savory juices of the grape in preparation for winemaking. A completely sanitary act, the combination of natural chemicals in the grapes kill any possible pathogens, stomping for wine is great fun, fabulously messy and a must-experience during the harvest season.

DANCING

Delicious wine just makes you want to dance. In a 9000 year old cave in India there are drawings on the walls showing the early relationship of social dancing and wine drinking. In ancient Greece, more paintings on walls depict celebrating the god of wine through dancing.

WINE AND WEDDINGS

Weddings with wine is thought to have begun in Greece during the celebrations of the wine god, Dionysus. The father of the bride would drink the first sip of wine to show it had not been poisoned before filling his guests’ glasses with wine from the same pitcher and toasting to health and prosperity.

In the Jewish traditions, wine is consumed to bless the bonds of marriage and to separate the union from the forbidden.

Wine has become a universal symbol representing the fulfillment of love between two people and the sacred joining of two lives. Marriage is depicted as a patient nurturing of the vine, tender and constant care of the grape and celebrating the fruits of labor.

DINNER AND WINE

Eating and drinking wine have been together for an estimated 8000 years. Wine was far safer to drink then water plus, wine brought out the natural taste of food. Meals served with wine became commonplace throughout the ages due to the celebratory aura of dining with guests, friends and family.

MUSIC

Wine and music have long since complemented each other due to the festive activities and practices of various cultures. In ancient China, wine was typically present during literally any form of memorial ceremony and banquet enhanced by the playing of music. During the Renaissance era, wine became available to the masses who added a variety of music to accompany the drinking of wine. Not much has changed in today’s age for music and wine go hand in hand in celebrating life’s events and successes as well as for the sake of pure enjoyment.

WINE FOR LEISURE

Around the Renaissance Era throughout Europe, wine drinking underwent a major transformation as the drink of the wealthy became the drink of the population. The taste of wine grew highly enjoyable and became consumed more for leisure purposes as wine making techniques improved and as it was no longer seen as the only safe beverage due to the development of water purification systems. Wine became an enjoyable drink to relax and unwind with at the end of a long day with peace and quiet surrounding you.
