There is a ancient creature known to many as Old Green Eyes who is believed to roam the bloody battlefields of Chickamauga at night.

There are documented vehicle accidents that occurred when visitors, who were driving through the park at night, claimed to have seen unearthly glowing green eyes staring out at them from the dark woods. These haunting eyes frightened them to such a degree they swerved off the road and wrecked.

Immediately calling park rangers or the police, these people filed reports stating officially that they had seen a terrifying vision prior to their accident. A vision with shining green eyes.

But these sightings are not just recent encounters. The leering green eyes date back to the bloody Civil War Battle of Chickamauga where the 125th Ohio Regiment saw a tiger like creature with shining green eyes roaming through the dead and dying on Snodgrass Hill. Other soldiers of the same battle claimed to have seen the unnatural form of a man searching the dead for his cannonball decapitated head.

There are beliefs that the Green Eyes spirit existed long before the Civil War when the Native Americans inhabited the land that would later become the battlefield of Chickamauga. However, it is possible that Green Eyes dates back to the ancient times of the mound builders and guards the sacred worship mounds.

Then there are those who say that Green Eyes is a legend that began as a campfire ghost story in the 1960’s. But all accounts throughout history have the one feature that remains constant and that is the glowing Green Eyes.

I have been many times to the beautiful and scenic Chickamauga Battlefield. We take our bicycles and our horses along the trail loop which leads you deep into the woods and away from visitors. I can account that there is an odd silence in areas of those woods especially where Civil War trenches scar the hillside. It is weird how my horse gets nervous (he’s usually pretty calm) and how he skirts around the eerie stone trenches while keeping his eyes locked on the area where many died.

He said the man looked shell shocked, his eyes were huge and disoriented, he was dirty with a disheveled uniform and he seemed lost. When my friend returned to the visitor center he asked if there was a reenactment going on that day which would explain why a lone Civil War dressed man would be walking the trail.

The park ranger responded with a no, the next reenactment would be several months later.

I have also ridden in a car through the battlefield at night but I will confess that I did not look up. The fear of actually seeing, or imagining to see, Green Eyes staring at me from dark woods kept me focused on the dashboard.

So, is this a legend, a creature or a ghost? If you are ever in the vicinity of Chickamauga Georgia and if you are not scared then take a long slow ride through the battlefield after dark and peer into the woods for a pair of green eyes.

You may see them.
