The Read House via Picnooga

The historic and allegedly haunted Read House of Chattanooga is one of downtown Chattanooga’s most respected and loved establishments. Built around 1867, The Read House has hosted many interesting and famous people such as Al Capone, Bing Crosby, Operah Winfrey, Winston Churchill and Gary Cooper as well as Bob Hope.

One of the most popular residents however, was (or maybe still is) a young prostitute named Annalisa Netherly who stayed in Room 311 at the Read House Hotel during the 1920’s. The story goes that, although she entered the hotel happy and excited, certain events turned sour resulting in her tragic demise.

One legend says she was found lying in the room’s bathtub covered in blood with her head nearly decapitated from her body by a jealous lover or angry husband.  Another legend says that she came to the hotel and stayed for some time with a gentleman who, after a fashion, turned his attentions towards another woman, leaving Annalisa so brokenhearted that she took her own life.

To this day, some feel that Annalisa has stayed around in this very room in order to find her revenge.  Over the years, many guests who have stayed in room 311 have reported odd and unexplained events such as weird noises, running water and shadowy figures.

Some guests have reported having actually seen Annalisa herself.  Others comment that they felt an unfriendly presence in the room especially amongst male guests.

To add to the overall creep factor of this room, 311 was the room Al Capone stayed in during the 1930’s. Bars were once constructed to the windows in order to imprison Capone while awaiting trial but were removed during renovations.
