When you hear Las Vegas, your mind immediately goes to the crazy lights and events of the strip.  But, there is much more to see around Vegas then downtown.  There are multiple awesome Las Vegas excursions as well offering some of the most amazing natural, and man-made, wonders anywhere in the world.

LAS VEGAS

If I had one sentence to sum up my first visit to Las Vegas it would be “complete sensory overload in luxuriously dazzling proportions”. This iconic strip that takes roughly 45 minutes to walk explodes with such massive beacons of light that it can be seen from space (that is saying a lot!).

I was initially out of my element however, I adapted.  You cannot help but get caught up in the sinfully glamorous glitter of Las Vegas.

Staying at the Bellagio made me feel as if I had money when I really didn’t.  Lunch in my room was exquisite and forever memorable (wish I had a photo) along with the spa visit (highly recommend).  The Fountains of Bellagio were mesmerizing, free and an event we made a point to frequently enjoy.

I was fortunate enough to be staying at the hotel during the changing out of the Conservatory & Botanical Garden allowing me to not only see two completely different spectacular showcases but to also watch the incredible changeover and transformation from one to the other.  The Garden was a daily hangout for me due to its astounding array of color, vibrancy and beauty along with the Worlds Largest Chocolate Fountain.

Exploring the hotels of Vegas provide excellent excursions and was a huge source of fun and entertainment for everyone in my group.  Each resort loudly boasts it’s own theme and is sure to marvel and enchant.  Touring around these spectacular resorts are typically free of charge and prove to provide   the perfect nighttime activity when the lights of Vegas are at their most radiant and the city is rocking.

M & M’s Store Las Vegas was the site of M & M’s first store, and it is worthy of a peek in. This store is a monument of sheer deliciousness. I was personally awed by not only the amount of candy available for my consumption but also by the artistic and colorful display of this magnificently wonderful treat.

A totally fun experience for everyone plus the souvenirs (Christmas presents in my case) are awesome, cute and yummy.

EXCURSIONS LOCATED JUST OUTSIDE THE LAS VEGAS STRIP

Downtown is definitely spectacular to say the least.  However, equally as spectacular, maybe more so, are the nearby Las Vegas excursions to some of the worlds’ most astounding natural and man-made wonders.

Hoover Dam is roughly 30 minutes from Vegas on the Nevada/Arizona border.  An engineer I am not however, I was nevertheless able to appreciate the skill and death-defying bravery that created this incredible structure.  360-degree views of the Colorado River, Lake Mead and the surrounding terrain are breathtaking, and I recommend the tour through the dam to better understand the mechanics and to learn the history of this concrete giant.

If you are a fan of the popular movie Transformers this is a must for you.  The 2007 movie has Hoover Dam coming under attack by Decepticons to capture the remains of their leader Megatron. Very cool!

***TIP:  Be sure not to miss the boulder that has been split by earthquakes

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is the perfect location for hiking, biking, horseback riding and rock climbing.  An excellent Las Vegas excursion and a mere 17 miles west of Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon is highly visited by tourists and offers a unique experience in nature.  A polar opposite from Las Vegas Strip, this majestic canyon offers wildlife viewing, breathtaking natural views and some peace and quiet.  Residing in the great Mojave Desert of Nevada, Red Rock Canyon offers spectacular photography moments from monumental peaks to ancient Native American petroglyphs.

With nearly 200,000 acres to explore, you will definitely want to bring water, food and some excellent walking shoes.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area is located roughly 47 minutes’ drive from the strip and provides an excellent location for swimming which is a lovely relief from the heat of the region.  Las Vegas can hit an average high of 105 degrees F in July so this might be an excursion for you if visiting during the summer months.  With 1.5 million acres plus over 700 miles of waterfront, you can definitely get outside and play.  It is absolutely beautiful.

Valley Of Fire

40,000 acres of deep red sandstone formations with some pink and orange hues thrown in makes Valley Of Fire just as colorful and as memorable as the strip. Located roughly 55 miles northeast of Vegas, Valley Of Fire will make you feel far away from the busy vibe of the strip. Mouse’s Tank Road will navigate you through gorgeous and unique vistas but definitely get out and hike and climb some rocks if you can.  Make sure you visit Pink Canyon, not many know about this and it is very pretty, Rainbow Vista, White Domes (beautiful 1.25-mile loop with a little bit of a challenge but not bad), Fire Wave (1.5-mile hike and fantastic) and The Beehives.

Starting April 2021, there will be a fee (don’t worry, not a bad one) so be sure to check website for this info and for any changes.  A 50-mile drive from the Vegas Strip, Valley Of Fire makes for an enjoyable outing especially if you are unable to visit the Grand Canyon which is a 4-hour car drive from Vegas.

Grand Canyon

Speaking of the Grand Canyon, although it is a four-hour drive from Vegas, it is definitely worthy of your time to visit such a magnificent artwork of nature.  Seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time, I was overwhelmed by the size and majesty of this geological gash in the earth that reveals millions of years of history.

277 miles long, 1 mile deep and 10 miles across, the Grand Canyon can also be seen from space. Estimated at over a billion years old and one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, I would recommend that everyone see this iconic landmark at least once even if it’s only a section of it.  This is one of those places where not even the best photography can fully capture the magnitude of the Grand Canyon.

There are options to seeing the Grand Canyon from Vegas if a drive is not appealing.

AWESOME TOURS AND ATTRACTIONS LAS VEGAS

Las Vegas airport offers flights to the Grand Canyon.  Flights from Vegas to the West Rim is roughly 35 minutes long and over an hour long to the South Rim.

There are also helicopter rides that entails 45 minutes of exciting and breathtaking aerial views plus landings in the canyon with a provided snack, but this is fairly pricey.  We were fortunate enough to have a friend pay for ours and it was an adventure I will always remember.  YAY Friend!!!

There are many other options to the Grand Canyon from Vegas such as bus tours and SUV tours. Click link above for a variety of canyon and other Vegas excursions.

**Tip:  A few highly rated budget eats to check out are Mr. MammasPeppermill Las Vegas and The Cheesecake Factory.

**Tip:  Las Vegas shows are spectacular!  I wish I had been able to see more however, Cirque du Soleil blew me away.  Even though sleep deprived for nearly 30 hours at this point, I hardly blinked during The Beatles LOVE. I highly recommend grabbing any Cirque du Soleil show.

We spent a total of 4 days in Las Vegas. A totally exhausting, sleep-deprived, exhilarating vacation…as it should be!
