Outdoor adventures at Fall Creek Falls State Park is what it’s all about here in this small but spectacular spot in Tennessee. It is the perfect piece of heaven filled with stunning vistas, tree canopied trails, swimming holes and a quaint village to shop and stroll.

Due west of the Smokies is a stunning landscape of mountains, waterfalls and cascades encompassing 26,000 acres on the great Cumberland Plateau. Close to the small town of McMinnville Tennessee, is one of my most favorite places to bike, swim, fish, boat, golf, camp, hike and just hang out: FALL CREEK FALLS STATE PARK

One of my favorite outdoor adventures at Fall Creek Falls are the bicycle trails that wind lazily around the lake and through dense forest. At Fall Creek Falls, you are given choices between bike trails that are completely paved and meander under heavily shading trees to more difficult mountain biking along rough terrain.

My favorite is the bike trail that begins at the lodge, glides alongside Fall Creek Lake and then through heavy forest.  The trail ends at the Fall Creek Falls overlook where you can hike down to the bottom of the falls or take a trail to the cascades. This is a very easy trail anyone can enjoy and the scenery along the way is simply gorgeous.

There are also mountain bike loops along old hiking trails that are a little challenging. The Upper Loop trail begins at the northern park headquarters and runs for a little over 13 miles and is the most challenging trail.

The overall atmosphere is family and wholesome with nature at its most beautiful. Most people bring their pets to swim and to walk the trails. There are restaurants that are dog friendly such as Crockett’s Mill Restaurant so take your BFF along for the trip.

Camping is excellent with primitive options available. There are also cabins and The Inn at Fall Creek Falls which has been entirely rebuilt.

Fall Creek Falls is one of the most beautiful places for a family picnic.  So many options to choose from to lay out a blanket and open a basket or find a table.

What we like to do is to pick up lunch along 111 at the Cookie Jar.  This is a cute little cafe and we use them all the time.  I highly recommend the Cookie Jar for a perfect picnic to take to the park.

Be sure to visit a truly cozy mountain village named, The Village.  Here you can swim in the Olympic size pool, partake of small town novelty shopping and you rent bikes if you didn’t bring your own. In this location, there are small eateries and huge pavilions for rent plus the park office whose official name is, the Park Office.

So, BEST TIME TO GO…I am going to give the typical answer of anytime of the year because it is always beautiful.  Be sure to check their events page as there is usually something going on plus they are open year round except on Christmas Day.

Now, MY FAVORITE TIME TO VISIT…September- October! The fall colors are spectacular, the weather comfortable and September – October are the months of their Mountain Folk Festival and Fall Colors Spooktacular.

All in all, Fall Creek Falls is one of my top 5 best places in Tennessee to bike, swim and to just hang out and enjoy nature. I plan to head on back as soon as my bike brakes are fixed!
